Starling Sessions
Starling Sessions is a global folk community orchestra, exploring traditional music from around the
world through the people of Oxford. The membership is international, and each week a different
person brings a song for the rest of the group to learn. Like the common starling, which makes its
home anywhere and has a knack for learning the songs of other birds around it, Starling Sessions
creates a musical mosaic from the people who have made their home in Oxford.
The group meets weekly in a rehearsal space at the Old Fire Station. In 2024, the organisers decided
to learn more about the impact of their work using the Storytelling Evaluation Method (Storytelling).
Storytelling is an evaluation approach developed by Old Fire Station and inspired by Most Significant
Change (MSC). It involves collecting stories from people about their experience of a project, and then
bringing other people together to discuss these stories and what can be learned from them.
This process will help the organisers of Starling Sessions to understand what being involved means to
people. It will inform priorities for future planning and help to communicate the value of their work
to funders and other potential supporters. We really appreciate your participation in this process, and
hope that it will be meaningful and enjoyable for you too.
